Traditional handmade scarves from Senegal, Mali and Burkino Faso; Music Is Medicine is clothing collaboration between Mame M’Diack and Brian D’Souza aka Auntie Flo.
Mame M’Diack is originally from Senegal, his instrument of choice is the Talking Drum and he’s widely-considered a very sharp dresser. Auntie Flo is from Glasgow-via-Goa, an affiliate of Worldwide FM and Brownswood, and he is known for bringing globe-trotting sounds to the club.
Mame and Auntie Flo met in 2016 and it wasn’t long before he asked Mame to join him on the tour of his Highlife album. But unfortunately the story of Mame n’Diack is one that echoes a lot of international musician and artists trying to make a living in 2019. As touring becomes the main source of income for most musicians, having freedom to travel to perform becomes paramount. Sadly, musicians outside of ‘friendly’ nations to the UK are treated as part of this governments policy for a ‘hostile environment’ - having to undergo lengthy and costly application processes to acquire visas, with the results often ending in a denial, or worst still, a ‘application pending’ long after the date of the gig has passed. All the while the application process is underway, they are without their passport, inhibiting their ability to play other gigs or work during that time. As part of the Auntie Flo touring band, Mame’s Story was an on-going one during the year with varying degrees of success - at one point almost sleeping rough in order to make his appointment in Dusseldorf before being given a bed by a stranger he met on the train! When Mame did make it, he was the star of the show, bringing his unique energy and massive personality onto the stage.
Mame’s long-term plan is to return to Senegal and launch a charity offering music lessons to children, but since re-locating to Amsterdam to be nearer to his children, it’s not been easy for Mame to find full-time work. Together Mame and Auntie Flo hatched a plan to launch Music Is Medicine.
West Africa’s long-standing tradition of textile weaving is just as rich as the beautiful fabrics they create. We have two types of scarf: Rabal and Bogolan. Rabal scarves are woven in Senegal on a traditional loom. Colours are bold and occasional strands of silver lurex are woven in with the main design. Bogolan originates from Senegal, Mali and Burkino Faso, each fabric is hand-made and hand-dyed with or organic cotton and natural dyes such as fermented mud, tree leaves or indigo. All products on this website have been hand-selected and finished by Mame and safe to say they are all extremely limited edition!
